Mr. Rogers would have celebrated his 85th birthday this week. In his honor, I am reposting one of my most popular blog entries, an ode to his signature style, “Fashion Tips From Mr. Rogers.” Read it here.
My favorite kind of shopping is when I’m actually not looking for anything, and something really fantastic catches my eye. That’s what happened when I was walking across 125th Street yesterday. I saw those beautiful clutches in the photo above, and they made me smile. They’re at Paradise Fashions at 27 West 125th Street, which also has a couple of other boutiques in New York as well as an online store. Those handbags are $100, but there are some lower cost options like these for $39.
And many come with matching shoes. I really love shopping on 125th Street, but you can also order these online if you can’t make it into the city. Paradise has many more cute clutches that I didn’t take pictures of. Just looking at all of them brightened my day.
Fashionmomix LOVES Jenna Lyons’ style. But most of us don’t have her paycheck for purchasing clothes, and J.Crew isn’t the most inexpensive place to shop. So Fashionmomix got street smart and found a way to get a little low cost Jenna stylin’. Look at these two necklaces:
The one on the left is J.Crew’s, which originally cost $88. The other one I bought on the street for $10! The vendor is at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue, near Hunter College, if you want to check out his jewelry.
Now some would criticize Fashionmomix for buying “rip off” street fashion. But I would never spend $88 on a necklace anyway. I’d rather put it in my child’s college fund or my 401K. So J. Crew isn’t losing a purchase that I would never make anyway. AND I still encourage you to shop at J.Crew’s factory site, which has lots of cool stuff on sale.
It’s hard to find cool clothes for little boys. But you can’t let girls have all the fun! I’ve looked far and wide, and the first place I go to for nice clothing for boys is Tea. Their stuff isn’t inexpensive, but luckily Haute Look is having a sale right now! Go scoop up some grooviness for your little one.
Fashionmomix loves Michelle Obama’s style but can’t afford her designer duds. But help is on the way! Back in 2009, Michelle wore some outfits by Sophie Theallet. Now the designer has a lower priced line inspired by the First Lady that’s available at The Limited. Check out Michelle’s dresses and compare to The Limited’s line.
Pretty close huh? The collection isn’t available in stores until March 20th but is available online now. At $118, these dresses aren’t cheap. But they could be a good investment, since they’re not too trendy that you can’t wear them season after season. And some of the accessories are more affordable. Take these two clutches on sale for $35.94.
I myself will probably buy this cuff bracelet for $26.90.
The weather outside may be starting to become frightful, but the DKNY sample sale is delightful. It’s where I bought the gold sequin dress I blogged about here, along with another cute LBD that I got tons of compliments on at a cocktail gathering last night. So brave the elements to check out the current sale at 260 Fifth Avenue, between 28th and 29th Streets. It’s going on now through this Saturday. Hours are 10am-8pm today and Thursday, 10am-7pm Friday, and 10am-2pm Saturday. I’ve waited until Saturday to shop there and still scored deals. So don’t give up on DKNY, even if you can’t make it there until the weekend!
